Embassy Computers Face Chinese Hacker Menace

The government, as well as private computers and laptops are believed to be controlled by a spy network controlled from China. The internet researchers who revealed this, also disclosed that by now these ghost networks have managed to hack into the classified documents of the victim institutions. The victims, according to the researchers include Nato, foreign ministries, banks, embassies, as well as some new firms across the world. They also claim that the computers used by the Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama, and the other exiles are also among the 1295 compromised computers.

The research team from the Information Warfare Monitor agency had initially set out for the investigation of Chinese Cyber espionage, alleged by the Tibetan exile community. However, the investigation led to a much broader network of infected machines all over the world. IWM, in on of its statements revealed that they could not identify the hackers conclusively, although the main source of the ghost network appeared to be China.

Over the years, Chinese hackers were found lurking in the cyber-spaces to target repeatedly the western networks. The invasion from China on the computers at the Whitehall departments including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2007 more than substantiates this. The MI5 director general Jonathan Evans had then alerted three hundred business firms in the UK that they were subject to cyber attack from China.

The intelligence chiefs of Britain had also issued a warning recently stating that potential capability for shutting down Britain by damaging its utilities and telecoms may have been gained by China by then. As a matter of fact, they also reminded the fact that the UK telecom giant BT has many of its vital equipment installed by the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, which can be used to impede critical services such as water supplies, food and power, at the time of an emergency.

Sony Vaio VGN-FW31ZJ Laptop

I had this really strange encounter last week. Sam had just then sent me this nice laptop – the Sony Vaio VGN-FW31ZJ. I was exploring it all day and started work really late. It was around midnight when I started the final chapters of my latest book. Words seemed to evade me. That too at that time of the night! I couldn’t sleep either! I really needed to finish that chapter. The plot was there, right inside my mind, but it seemed to be stuck, I couldn’t bring it out in words. In desperation, I put on my coat and decided to take a walk. The air outside was so chilly, but I braved it. I took a turn around the flickering street lamp and decided to sit by the usual stone bench and go over the plot once again in my mind. On first look, I stopped dead on my tracks for, a bluish glow seemed to emanate from somewhere near the bench. My insides screamed and I spun on the spot and almost ran home. “Mrs. Page!” called a soft voice and I turned to see a smiling lady, almost the same age as me, with a laptop in her hand. “Did I scare you? I was working on my laptop, ans saw you running once you saw me.” “Oh!” I let out a huge sigh of relief and said, “Well, it’s not that common to see a woman sitting with her laptop in the dead of the night.” “Oh, that. It was getting a little noisy at home-my husband and his television! Just thought I’d sit here for a while by myself.” “Is that so?” “Yes, and are you working on your latest book?” “Yes” I said, still a bit shaken. To buy myself some time, I steered the conversation to her laptop. “Is that a Sony Vaio?” “Yes!” she beamed. “Brand new! My son got it for me. It’s the Sony Vaio VGN-FW31ZJ laptop. Come on, let’s goto the bench, I’ll tell you more about it.”

Thus, I walked with a stranger alone in the dead of the night, without a clue as to what I was doing. Once seated, she opened her laptop excitedly and I must admit I was a little drawn to the spiffy laptop. “Here, take a look. You know, I’m crazy of these electronic gadgets, I learnt all about this one. To start with, it runs on a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9950 processor. Then there is a 1.3 megapixel ‘Motion Eye’ camera and Blu-ray drive.” By now I was so into the laptop that I forgot about everything else. “And, is there Bluetooth connectivity?” I asked feeling the keys of the keyboard. “Yes, yes there is Bluetooth connectivity and a HDMI connector, so you can watch high-definition movies!”

In the dull moon light, I noticed that she was dressed rather oddly and smelled of strong tobacco. I wondered if I was doing the right thing, sitting there and encouraging conversation with a weird woman. “Graphics is powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650. And, oh I didn’t tell you about the hard drive. It’s about 500 GB.” I noticed that there was an SD card slot and a Memory Stick reader. The operating system was a Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. I also noticed that she could open two full-size windows adjacently. “Look at that clarity!” she went on, the screen has Real wide Full HD, and watching movies is an out-of-the-world experience! And what else…..and yes, my VGN-FW31ZJ features a built in microphone, stereo speakers and the quality of the audio is excellent, due to the Dolby Sound Room 3D surround sound system.”

The battery comes to about two and a half hours of regular usage. This Sony Vaio laptop also has WiFi 802.11a/b/g/Draft n capability and it weighs about 3.2 kg. And what else did I miss?” “I guess that’s about it. I better leave.” I said getting up. The woman jumped to her feet and said, “Hey! not so fast Mrs Page!” saying this she grabbed hold of my arm. “Let me go! What do you think you’re doing?” I struggled to get free, and heard a low moan of pain and realised that it was mine- her nails dug into my flesh that blood streamed out. I pulled with all my might and managed to release her grip. I ran like a mad woman, tears streaming down my face. I turned back once to see where she was, but she was nowhere in sight. I ran on and on, my heart in my mouth. Then there was this diabolical laughter – I felt it was echoing behind me. The tears flowed all the more and I could almost hear my sobs. A sparrow flew out of nowhere and I stopped. Wait. A sparrow? In this time of the night? Reality dawned on me, and I felt incredibly stupid- the whole thing was a dream!! I stepped out of bed chuckling and walked towards the sparrow that was sitting on my window sill. She looked at me with her tiny little head tilted, “Thank you little one” I said. “You’re my saviour.” I reached forward to touch her, but she flew off into the early morning sky.
