Asus Eee PC 1000 Notebook and Asus Eee PC 901 Notebook, a comparison
Posted on September 1, 2008
Asus has started to make it a habit that whenever some manufacturers declare a challenger to its Eee PC hit model, it promptly launches a new flagship much to the annoyment of its rivals. The circumstance is nothing different here, myriad laptop manufacturing companies have declared or launched as much products with a common tag that says, ‘the Eee killer’. They have been consistently targeting some of Asus’s flagships such as Asus Eee PC 900, Eee PC 901, Eee PC 701, etc. This time the Asus Empire has struck back with the introduction of a novel version called Asus Eee PC 1000 Ultraportable Notebook.
It looks very much similar to its predecessor, the Asus Eee PC 901 White Notebook with its 10 inch design, power-package of a six-cell battery and even that ultra-sleek plastic casing. The display screen of this model that iamounts to 10” in diagonal size, comes studded with a total of 1024 x 600 pixels and features a smart LED backlight. A larger keyboard is another factor that distinguishes this product from its predecessor. This is obviously the outcome of deigning a larger chassis that, at 266mm in cross measurement, makes this model a clear 4 cm wider than the Eee PC 901. Undoubtedly, with its extra bit of compactness, the Eee PC 901 score slightly above the Eee PC 1000 in terms of portability but if this extra bit of size does not matter, the user obviously has a stunner of a keyboard at his disposal with the Eee PC 1000.
The user is sure for a shock if he/she anticipated a rdical change in the inside part of th Eee PC 1000. The
processor is still the Intel Atom N270 CPU with a clock speed of 1.6GHz, supported by a RAM memory of 1GB. Bluetooth and 10/100 fast ethernet are also included in the data transfer sector of this model. The Eee PC 901 Linux edition, as widely known, came with a 20GB NAND Flash drive that has been doubled up here by the Eee PC 1000 with its 40GB SSD. The Windows version of the new comer, in its turn comes with a massive 80GB on-board memory. Other connectivity aspects of the two notebooks are also more or less the same with three USB connections, Wi-Fi and no digital TV tuners or Firewire. Complying with the 176 x 225 x31mm dimensions as against the Asus Eee PC 1000 White Notebook‘s 265 x 190 x 35mm dimensions, the Asus Eee PC 901 UMPC is of considerable lightweight too than its successor with 1153 grams against 1348 grams.

Great review, if I hadn't just bought an Acer? netbook I would have given this a look. Just want to point out when you are talking about the hard drives, those aren't 2 drives, it is one hard drive partitioned as 2. Just makes windows see it as 2, usually so they can have one “drive” be for recovery. It is a good idea to have 2 if you can, but the size factor makes it not possible in a netbook. Still a good practical review!
