Introduction to Laptops

January 31, 2008

Laptops are small personal computers that owe their huge popularity to their compact, portable and power saving features. Their compact design, portability and capacity to run on a single battery enable you to work from any place you prefer. With their light features (as even the heaviest among the laptops does not weigh more than 15 pounds), you can transport it to anywhere with ease.

Due to their small designs, laptops usually lack powerful graphics or sound features when compared with their desktop counterparts. However, they perform as well as desktop PCs in other areas, or even better. For instance, they make relatively less noise and generate less heat. Also their liquid crystal displays emit less radiation so you rarely suffer from eye strain when you work for prolonged time.

Laptops work in a similar way that desktops do their tasks as they have similar hardware components like processor, motherboard, hard drive, CD drive, sound cards, video cards, USB ports etc. Only difference being, laptops have these components in much smaller sizes so that they can fit into its compact design.

Unlike desktop PCs, laptops come with in-built peripherals like keyboards and liquid crystal displays (LCD screens) and they do not occupy as much space as the desktop computers do. They also have integrated touchpads that allow you to work without a mouse. However, most laptops available today allow you to connect an external mouse or keyboard or use a pointing stick.

With your laptop you get an AC/DC adaptor which recharges the battery as well as provides power supply to your system while you are working. Although the battery life depends up on the size of your laptops and its power usage, it can go for two or three hours after a full recharge.

Laptops generally cost more than a desktop PC with similar configurations as their small, hardware components are still expensive to manufacture although the prices have been falling in recent years. As the demand for laptops among business men and home users is constantly on rise, newer models with different price ranges are available in today’s market.

To sum up, laptops have following advantages over desktop PCs:
  • Due to their compactness, they occupy much less space.
  • They weigh less and are completely portable so they are ideal for mobile use and travelers.
  • Most laptops come with numerous options for connecting USB devices, networking devices, printers etc.
  • They produce less noise and heat while working.
  • They consume much less power and can run on a single battery although external batteries can also support them. This makes laptops ideal for use in places where power is not available for a short period.
  • Although the high-end laptops are expensive, the price of cheaper laptops come close to that of desktop PCs.
