A Probable New Laptop Manufacturer

Guess who’s joining the laptop manufacturing community soon? Well, they are none other than the largest mobile phone makersNokia! The CEO of the organisation, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, recently revealed the company’s keenness to join the laptop market. Now why would a successful mobile phone producer want to enter an over-populated netbook commercial area? Kallasvuo is of the opinion that it would not be far when the mobile phone and the portable computer would converge.

Mobile phone and portable computer convergence? Is the netbook going to become smaller and include phone features, or is the mobile phone going to get a little larger? It is true that mobile PCs are becoming smaller and smaller in size. Portability wise, this is an advantage. However, considering ergonomics, working comfort and viewing might not be very convenient for many.

There have been cross overs previously between the computer zone and the mobile phone zone. HP, Samsung, Apple and Dell are some of the experienced players in this field. Acer had recently set foot in the mobile phone arena too.

Nokia’s mobile phones are known for their ruggedness, user-friendliness and style. The recent GSMA  Mobile World Congress, 2009, held at Barcelona, saw the display of some of Nokia’s latest cell phones.  Nokia 5630 Xpress Music Phone, Nokia E75 Smartphone and Nokia N86 Smartphone were among them. Another recent model, Nokia N97 Mobile Phone, is almost like a mini netbook itself. It has a form factor that makes it look like one too. The Nokia E75 Smartphone is another Nokia masterpiece. With the credit of making such smartphones, making a laptop should not be difficult for the company.

Also, when Nokia are judged on the basis of innovations, they rank quite high. Their latest Ovi Store feature which would be available on S60 and Series 40 products soon, is an example. This store offers a line-up of contents like games, applications, podcasts, videos, widgets, location-based services and more. This feature lets you stay up to date, stay connected and share information, wherever you are and whenever you want. Syncing up contact details and other information with a PC is made very easy too. Thus, it is obvious that Nokia always keeps the doors of innovations open. Maybe one can say that their mobile computers too will offer some of the most creative and unrivalled features, that might put it on the top of the laptop charts. Do we see some worried faces in the laptop manufacturing crowd?

Turning our attention to the operating system, it is a big question mark as to which OS the Nokia mobile computers will feature. Nokia’s native OS, Symbian, and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS are having a neck-to-neck competition in the mobile phone industry today. Although Symbian is known for its low battery consumption, especially when the device supports Bluetooth and WiFi, it is a fact that people all over the world are more familiar with the Windows operating system. The Symbian will need to undergo some changes too, to support additional laptop functionality, like more powerful graphics. Hence it is quite difficult to predict the OS that would be shipped with the Nokia laptops.

There is little doubt that Nokia Laptops will carry on the trend of durability, sturdiness and looks. Their cell phones are already in the top cream for display, performance, networking abilities and connectivity. However, little can be said on how the internal functioning of their computers would be. What softwares and specifications will be adopted? Will Nokia create the same magic with their laptops as they did with their phones? We’ll keep our eyes and ears open.
