Asus DR-570 OLED eBook Reader… Does it Offer More Than the Apple iPad?

The news of the Asus DR-570 eBook Reader came a little earlier than the Apple iPad, which was announced just yesterday. However, the latter is expected to release sometime in March 2010, while the former might release only later on during this year. Though these are different sized tablets, there are certain aspects which can’t be helped but compared. So here goes…

The Apple iPad is a larger tablet than the Asus DR-570. The iPad has a 9.7″ LCD touchscreen. The Asus tablet is just a 5.7″ OLED touchscreen device. In general, OLED screens are reputed for better display quality and lower power consumption than their LCD counterparts. Another noteworthy aspect is multi-touch ability.
While the Apple iPad will feature the same, it is not clear right now if the Asus tablet will imbibe the quality. Both tablets are said to support WiFi. The Asus DR-570 is supposed to offer 3G capability. The initial iPads will ship without 3G, which will be included in the versions shipping a little later. The Asus DR-570 is said to have a 0.03 second page turn. The Apple iPad page turn time is not known currently. |
| Another striking difference between these gadgets is the support for Flash videos. The Asus tablet supports Flash while the Apple iPad currently does not.
The Flash player is required to view many of the online animation videos. One more thing that sets the Asus DR-570 apart from the Apple iPad is its text to speech engine. Other features of this tablet are 4GB SDHC storage (the Apple iPad will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flash drive configurations); 512MB of SDRAM; built-in web browser, built-in RSS reader; might offer support for online video streaming with Amazon video on demand; navigation; 3D gaming; support for a variety of video and audio files. The Asus DR-570 Tablet can blow one off their feet with its battery life. It claims to offer 122 hours of runtime. That surely sounds too good to be true. We’ll have to wait and watch if the device lives up to its promise. |
