The Slumdog Millionaire Child Actor And My Dell Studio XPS 13 Laptop
April 27, 2009
It was just a normal day that had begun with a cup of coffee and the 9 o’clock news. But then it turned out to be one of the days my mind is as agitated as The Thar desert in a windstorm. The reason - The news that the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child-actor Rubina Ali was to be sold for 200,000 pounds. The news made me sit up straight. Statements like “I have to consider what is best for me, my family and Rubina’s future,” “I’m not going to let my girl go.” and the little girl’s face was flashed across news channels, news papers and the internet. I couldn’t work all day. Whether or not it’s true, just imagine the state of mind of that little girl! She probably would have been flocked by journalists from all over the world, wanting a piece of her. Poor child!
As the day wore on, I couldn’t work and set to take my Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop along to Margret’s for a chat and may be a little bit of work later in the day. I drove along the streets of London with my mind still on Rubina – I crossed buildings, pedestrians, dogs in leashes, lovers kissing at a park bench, an old couple walking, fields, pastures…wait a minute! Pastures? I stopped the car and was struck by the sudden change in the landscape. I had driven myself to some strange place.
It was empyrean, that it inspired a smooth flow of words and I set to work right there. My words took shape of their own – some places have magic in them you know, they can inspire words fit for the next Booker. Rubina’s cherubic face, the innocent smile in her face, seemed to haunt me. Was she really to be sold? Oh God, If a father was to give away his beloved daughter for a sum of money, did it not reflect the conditions they were living in? May be Rafiq wanted his daughter to have a better life. Was it love for his girl that drove him to give her away to a wealthy sheik? Or was it greed? Or was he impeccant and the whole thing a drama staged by the media? Such thoughts rumbled like dark clouds in my mind that I actually mistook the actual darkening of the clouds overhead for a phantasma of my own pensive mind. Now, wait a minute, don’t form the impression that I envisage too much, for that’s my job- that is what a writer is supposed to do.
I drove off to Margret’s, for that place was unhinging my mind. Margret made me a cup of my favourite hot chocolate, and we sat in her garden next to a sweet-smelling bush of yellow flowers. Careful not to start a conversation on anything serious, Margret started off with her usual “Oh, how I wish Tyler ends that crazy expedition of his!” Her son Tyler was hitch-hiking across Europe to Asia, with meeting the Aghori tribes of Benares as his sole purpose. It has been seven months since he left and Margret spends days and nights thinking of him, hoping upon hope that he’s not smoking a joint with some grizzly-bearded man at the foot hills of the Himalayas.

I opened up my laptop to distract her, for she loves these modernistic gadgets. “Now this is a dandy looking laptop, Brig! Do you know what processor it runs on?” Now here we go again, thought I. Because Margret teaches electronics at a local college and I was sure she will question me in and out about my laptop. Anything to take her mind off Tyler. And so I said, “This is Tessa’s laptop Maggie. It’s the Dell Studio XPS 13. It has a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 processor– it’s quite fast.” “Mmmm, the screen resolution? It looks nice.” “It’s about 1280×800. Has a 4GB RAM, if you want to know. Has a 2 megapixel webcam, Nvidia GeForce 9500M for graphics, which does a fine job. Graphics is a stunner here, Maggie, it uses the Hybrid SLI technology.” “Oh, really? I’m sure it has Bluetooth, right?” “Ofcourse it has! And Wi-Fi too! And what else….yes, there’s a DVD-RW optical drive and the operating system is Windows Vista Home as you can see.”
Feeling the underside, Margret said, “Oh, I feel the heat. It gets hot quite quickly!” “Sadly, yes. And hey the keyboard and mouse are backlit, for which I’m extremely happy. Then there’s an HDMI port and two USB ports.” “It’s a good bargain, nice and thin, if you look over a few hitches that is.” The rest of the day was spent in nostalgia of our school days, when the both of us had a major crush on the same boy, David. We spent sunny days in the swimming pool of my parents’ house arguing about who David smiled at during the lunch break!

It was time to leave, for both of us had our work to get back to – I to my short story collection and she to a presentation on 32-bit microprocessors. At the juncture of opening the door and the quotidian ‘Come agains’, ‘good byes’ and ‘call me when you have the times’, Margret asked a little tentatively, “Some thing’s bothering you, Brig. What is it?” I hesitated. “Maggie, it’s just that…the whole set up…the whole world..I can’t seem to understand it.” Maggie’s brows furrowed and she smiled warmly, the crow’s foot near her eyes deepening. “You never change, Brig. Think too much, that’s what you do… listen now Brig. This is important. I cannot change the world, but you can. With your pen- it’s your sword. I really believe you can. You have a kind heart, have courage sprinkled in the right proportion. And strong words and convictions to back it. If not now, someday you will.” I left her without a word, her words lending me speechless. As I sat with my night gown, with my pen in hand at the workdesk, I heard the clock strike 11. I wrote about a little girl at the slums, I named her Chloe. The story evolved of its own. Chloe faces difficulties, yes. Life in the slums is not easy. But she tries her best to prevail, neighbours scoff and elders mock. “You’re a dirty cat” they say. “Look at your fur peeling off! Eat the remains and learn to starve. Do not strive to be someone you are not.” But in the end, it’s the dirty cat that rises above the world like a tigress. As brilliant and as magnificent as ever. She’s here to rule.
Sony Vaio VGN-FW31ZJ Laptop
March 28, 2009
I had this really strange encounter last week. Sam had just then sent me this nice laptop – the Sony Vaio VGN-FW31ZJ. I was exploring it all day and started work really late. It was around midnight when I started the final chapters of my latest book. Words seemed to evade me. That too at that time of the night! I couldn’t sleep either! I really needed to finish that chapter. The plot was there, right inside my mind, but it seemed to be stuck, I couldn’t bring it out in words. In desperation, I put on my coat and decided to take a walk. The air outside was so chilly, but I braved it. I took a turn around the flickering street lamp and decided to sit by the usual stone bench and go over the plot once again in my mind. On first look, I stopped dead on my tracks for, a bluish glow seemed to emanate from somewhere near the bench. My insides screamed and I spun on the spot and almost ran home. “Mrs. Page!” called a soft voice and I turned to see a smiling lady, almost the same age as me, with a laptop in her hand. “Did I scare you? I was working on my laptop, ans saw you running once you saw me.” “Oh!” I let out a huge sigh of relief and said, “Well, it’s not that common to see a woman sitting with her laptop in the dead of the night.” “Oh, that. It was getting a little noisy at home-my husband and his television! Just thought I’d sit here for a while by myself.” “Is that so?” “Yes, and are you working on your latest book?” “Yes” I said, still a bit shaken. To buy myself some time, I steered the conversation to her laptop. “Is that a Sony Vaio?” “Yes!” she beamed. “Brand new! My son got it for me. It’s the Sony Vaio VGN-FW31ZJ laptop. Come on, let’s goto the bench, I’ll tell you more about it.”
Thus, I walked with a stranger alone in the dead of the night, without a clue as to what I was doing. Once seated, she opened her laptop excitedly and I must admit I was a little drawn to the spiffy laptop. “Here, take a look. You know, I’m crazy of these electronic gadgets, I learnt all about this one. To start with, it runs on a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9950 processor. The 4GB RAM is upgradeable to about 8GB. “The screen looks nice” I commented. “Yes, ain’t it? It’s 16.4inches with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Then there is a 1.3 megapixel ‘Motion Eye’ camera and Blu-ray drive.” By now I was so into the laptop that I forgot about everything else. “And, is there Bluetooth connectivity?” I asked feeling the keys of the keyboard. “Yes, yes there is Bluetooth connectivity and a HDMI connector, so you can watch high-definition movies!”
In the dull moon light, I noticed that she was dressed rather oddly and smelled of strong tobacco. I wondered if I was doing the right thing, sitting there and encouraging conversation with a weird woman. “Graphics is powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650. And, oh I didn’t tell you about the hard drive. It’s about 500 GB.” I noticed that there was an SD card slot and a Memory Stick reader. The operating system was a Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. I also noticed that she could open two full-size windows adjacently. “Look at that clarity!” she went on, the screen has Real wide Full HD, and watching movies is an out-of-the-world experience! And what else…..and yes, my VGN-FW31ZJ features a built in microphone, stereo speakers and the quality of the audio is excellent, due to the Dolby Sound Room 3D surround sound system.”
The battery comes to about two and a half hours of regular usage. The laptop also has WiFi 802.11a/b/g/Draft n capability and it weighs about 3.2 kg. And what else did I miss?” “I guess that’s about it. I better leave.” I said getting up. The woman jumped to her feet and said, “Hey! not so fast Mrs Page!” saying this she grabbed hold of my arm. “Let me go! What do you think you’re doing?” I struggled to get free, and heard a low moan of pain and realised that it was mine- her nails dug into my flesh that blood streamed out. I pulled with all my might and managed to release her grip. I ran like a mad woman, tears streaming down my face. I turned back once to see where she was, but she was nowhere in sight. I ran on and on, my heart in my mouth. Then there was this diabolical laughter – I felt it was echoing behind me. The tears flowed all the more and I could almost hear my sobs. A sparrow flew out of nowhere and I stopped. Wait. A sparrow? In this time of the night? Reality dawned on me, and I felt incredibly stupid- the whole thing was a dream!! I stepped out of bed chuckling and walked towards the sparrow that was sitting on my window sill. She looked at me with her tiny little head tilted, “Thank you little one” I said. “You’re my saviour.” I reached forward to touch her, but she flew off into the early morning sky.
Fujitsu LifeBook A6210
March 9, 2009
Ever heard of phone calls that changed people’s lives? Well, if you’ve not, let me tell you, one sure did change mine. Here I was, sitting at my desk, working on my next book, one cold December night when my mobile phone rang. “Hello, am I speaking to Mrs. Page?” asked a raspy voice. It scared me out of my wits, you know. “Yes, its me, Could I know who this is?” I couldn’t mask the fear in my voice. The person at the other end remained silent for a while, and then said, “I am your greatest fan.” Pause. “You changed my life.” Pause. I waited patiently, still trembling at the mystery behind that voice. “Is it possible to meet you?” a long pause. “Please?” “Yes” said I, without realising what I was saying. This is how I met Chris. His entry into my life changed it from the roots. He is an eccentric. His persona is totally different from his raspy, cold voice. He doesn’t talk much, but is smart as a whip.
To me, life was just about writing, earning fame and money, friends and family. But, Chris made me see things that I had failed to see. Right now, I’m sitting at the far end of Barney’s Kitchen, waiting for Chris. And, hey, I always tell you about my laptops, don’t I? Okay, I have with me, a Fujitsu LifeBook A6210. Have a look, doesn’t it look sophisticated? It has an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz processor in it. It is a 15.4 inch laptop with a RAM of 3 GB and a 250GB hard drive. It measures about 14.5 x 10.4 x 1.7 inches. I love it that it is Blue-ray enabled. It has a Widows Vista Home Premium operating system installed in it. Oh, here comes the waiter, excuse me for a bit. “Hello, could I have a Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding please, Pie and Mash with parsley liquor, and Black Pudding, and. We’ll have chocolate mousse for dessert.” “Sure thing, madam. In 20 minutes.” “Take your time, son. Thank you.” Now where were we? Hey are you wondering why I ordered such as elaborate meal? Chris loves a fancy meal. And he is partial to pies. Oh, what’s taking him so long?
Fine, let’s talk about my laptop in the meantime. My LifeBook A6210 has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 HyperMemory for graphics. It incorporates a wireless USB, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. The keyboard is responsive and so is the touch pad. There is also a fingerprint reader and a 1.3-megapixel Webcam. I had an enjoyable video chat with Sam last night, using the webcam. And, didn’t I tell you? Sam is in Scotland visiting friends. He’s quite happy, by the grace of God. My laptop has Stereo speakers and headphone/microphone jacks. Apart from these, there are also certain additional features, like an eSATA port and slots for both ExpressCard and PC Card. The quick-launch buttons are quite handy and it weighs about 6.7 pounds, but the thing is, I feel it is a bit on the bulky side, and I can’t carry it around with ease.
Now, there, I see Chris’ car pulling over. Oh, he’s wearing that funny shirt of his again. Did I tell you, he runs an orphanage and also has a home for abandoned animals. He’s a millionaire you know, but to date, I don’t think he’s spent a penny on himself. Here he comes, and that’s Anna, his adopted daughter at his side. “Well, hello both of you. Sit down, I’ve ordered Roast beef.” “Mrs. Page, dad was up all night, asking me to read out your ‘Confessions’. We slept only by five in the morning.” “Is that so? Now Chris, why…” “Come on, Brig” interrupted Chris. “That book of yours gives me this indescribable feeling. I can’t possibly stop when I’m in between can I?” I smiled, or rather blushed. God, this man is unbelievably cherubic. And hey did I tell you? Chris was born blind.
Toshiba Tecra M10-10I Laptop
February 26, 2009
“But, then Bridgette, there’s nothing like reading a hand-written letter. Way back in the 80s when I was working I the US, Mary used to write me those long letters in her elegant handwriting. It made me cry you know, the thought of her so far away but yet so close.” “Letters and Mary, I miss them so much.” Uncle Sam fell silent. I let him be, deep in a world of his own. “Nobody writes letters these days.” he stated flatly. “Uncle Sam,” said I, “People are too busy these days…too busy to stop and smile. Too busy to hold a pen. Look at this laptop for instance. All you need to do is type something in and email it. Ever heard of electronic mail?”
“Yes. I’ve hear of that. And, this laptop looks quite good. Jim has one too. Tell me, Brig, what all does it have?” “This is the Toshiba Tecra 14.1-inch M10-10I Laptop, uncle Sam. It has a 3072 MB RAM installed in it. It measures about 33.7×3.84×24.5 cm. Come on, lets go for a walk. It’s pleasant outside. I’ll tell you more as we walk.” We walked out to Marylin street, which was quite deserted. “The laptop weighs about 2.4 kg uncle.” “And Jim was talking about graphics and processor. On what processor does your laptop run, Brig?” “Well, well you do know quite a lot don’t you uncle! Okay, my M10-10I has a Core 2 Duo T9400 processor and Intel GMA 4500MHD for graphics. The hard drive is of 250 GB which is more than enough to store all of my documents and digital media.”
“Hey, look!” Exclaimed Uncle Sam suddenly jubilant. “Brig, you see Larry’s doughnuts over there? Oh, it’s still there. That’s where Mary and I used to date when we were in our teens. Mary, used to love their chocolate doughnuts.” “Do you want to go there now, uncle?, I asked tentatively for uncle Sam stood still, gazing ahead. “No.” he said curtly. “Let’s go Brig. I can’t bear to go there without her.” We walked in silence for a while, and I realised uncle Sam had not recovered from aunt Mary’s death even after five long years. “I’m sorry Brig, what were we talking about? Yes, your laptop. Okay, tell me, what operating system does it have installed in it?” My Toshiba Tecra M10-10I Intel Core 2 Duo Laptop has Windows Vista Business, uncle Sam. There is a DVD for downgrade to Windows XP Professional, too. It weighs about 2.4 kg and has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
“Brig dear, Jim’s has a webcam. Does your’s have one too?” asked Uncle Sam, his expression as inquisitive as a child’s. “I can configure it with a webcam, uncle. A notable feature about my Toshiba Tecra M10-10I is security. It has hard-drive protection, a spill-resistant keyboard, fingerprint scanner and a ‘Trusted Platform Module’ all included in the EasyGuard suite. I love the keyboard with its large keys and the excellent 1,440×900 pixel display. But, then the battery life is quite moderate and I cannot carry it around everywhere.”
Just then, we realised we had trailed quite far from home and decided to dine at an old-fashioned restaurant before heading home. Uncle Sam looked rather withdrawn and said, “I miss laughing at Mary’s non-humorous jokes.” “Uncle,” began I, tentatively. “I know you loved aunt Mary more thank yourself. But then, you have to go on. Go on a holiday, meet your friends, do things that’ll keep you occupied. It hurts to see you all so depressed.” Uncle Sam pressed my palm and said, “Yes, Brig, you are right. But still, I can’t accept the fact that I’ll never receive her long letters anymore.” For this, I had nothing to say.
Lenovo IdeaPad S10e Laptop
February 14, 2009
Today is the first peaceful day I have for myself after the launch of ‘Pretensions’. Oh, didn’t I tell you? The novel of which I spoke to you was a huge hit. I’ve been on the move for the last ten days giving out interviews, read-outs, promotions and what not! Phew! I’m happy I have this whole day all for myself. One of my readers, Adrian Woodbury from Ashford to be more precise, gifted me a laptop. It’s a Lenovo IdeaPad S10e 1.3 megapixel camera laptop. Have a look at it. I love the plum-red colour. It measures about 25 x 18.3 x 2.8cm – its quite compact. It runs on a Intel’s Atom 1.60GHz N270 processor. And the…excuse me while I answer the door.
“Hi, Mike, come in, come in!” “Hello aunt Bridgette! Came to meet a friend of mine and thought I’ll pay you a visit.”
“Oh, It’s been so long..sit down sit down…what will you have to eat? Shall I bake some thing?”
“Mmm, how about choco-chip muffins aunt? Mom makes ‘em and I just love them.” “Sure thing Mikey. Come, I’ll make some tea for you.”
Hey, aunt Bridgette, thats a cool-looking laptop you got here!”
“It’s a Lenovo IdeaPad S10e 10.1 inch netbook. Go ahead, take a look” “The screen is LED backlit! What’s the resolution aunt Brig?”
“It’s about 1,024 x 600 pixels. Mikey dear. “The colours are quite sharp. And did you notice, there is a 1.3 megapixel camera on top of the bezel” “What about memory, aunt?” asked Mike tapping the keyboard as he spoke.
“The RAM is about 1GB, of which 512MB is upgradeable. You can make it 2.5GB by installing 2GB more. And Mike, it has Intel’s integrated GMA 950 for graphics. Go on and explore it, while I start on the muffins.”
“And, aunt before I forget, my friends wanted your autographs.” “Did you like the book Mikey?” “Actually aunt, It was boredom wrapped up in the shape of a book!” said Mike, with a mischievous glint in his eyes. I stared at him in disbelief as he bursted out laughing. I gave him a painful tug at his his ears and he yowled aloud saying “Okay, okay, I was just kidding! It was an excellent book aunt. The last chapter gave me chills.”
“Now that is my Mikey! Come on in to the kitchen table. We can chat while I bake. You can bring the laptop if you want.” I set out to melt the chocolate bars and whisk the eggs. “How’s Elda, Mikey?” “She’s good aunt” said Mikey distractedly. He was busy fidgeting with the laptop.
“I see that your IdeaPad S10e has a pre-loaded Windows XP Home. And, it has a swell keyboard.” “Aunt Brig, does it have Bluetooth?” “Aunt?!”
“Sorry Mikey” said I, after carefully measuring out two cups of chocolate sauce and egg whites. “Did I hear Bluetooh? Yes, the laptop has Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11a/b WiFi and 10/100Mbps wired Ethernet. And the hard disk is of 160GB. Here, is the sugar enough?” I offered him a taste of the batter.
“Uh-huh. Its perfect” said Mike. Still keen about the laptop. “And, oh, it has a 34mm ExpressCard slot. And, two ports for audio and USB. And a 4-in-1 card reader and a VGA out port.” “How much do you think it weighs, aunt?”
“About 1.14kg, I believe” said I, as I placed the muffins to bake in the oven. “Another twenty minutes, and they’ll be done. Come on, lets go to the living room. I’ll show you the photographs of my trip to the US.”
We settled in the couch with cups of tea and a bag of chips. “How’s the battery aunt?” asked Mike, indicating the IdeaPad S10e. “It has a 3-cell battery with it, Mike. I wish it was a 6-cell unit instead.”
We chatted on about Mike’s friends and his ’special’ Margret. “I hope to marry her one day” he said with his cheeks flushed pink. Just then, the muffins pulled us with invisible strings. The chocolate-brown muffins were baked to perfection. The chocolate-chips melted in our mouths. “Mmmmm…” said both of us in unison as we took our first bites and laughed.
