Toshiba Satellite U500-1EX Laptop gets a Touchscreen Refresh

Toshiba have announced the launch of their new laptop, the Toshiba Satellite U500-1EX with a 13.3″ multi-touch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.
This new workstation has some really interesting specs too. The Intel Core i3-330 processor which has a clock speed of 2.13GHz is integrated within. A maximum of 4GB DDR3 RAM can be configured in this laptop. The hard drive can have up to 320GB of storage space. Windows 7 will be pre-loaded on this notebook.
A new tool called Toshiba LifeSpace will feature on this device. There’s supposed to be a utility called Bulletin Board, which lets you create thumb-nail shortcuts. Another utility called ReelTime allows quick searching if files.
Other features include Bluetooth, 2 USB ports, an eSATA/USB combo port, a high definition web camera with microphone, a 5-in-1 Bridge Media slot, an HDMI port, a DVD super-multi drive, WiFi and Gigabit LAN.
The price of the Toshiba Satellite U500-1EX Touchscreen Notebook is £649.
Apple iPad UK Release Confirmed

Apple have announced that their latest hi-tech gadget, the Apple iPad, that’s making headlines all over the internet, will be releasing in the UK soon. The 3G version of the iPad is reported to step into the market in April, this year, while the non-3G model will start shipping prior to that, maybe towards the end of March, 2010. This is almost similar to the release schedule of the US.
The pricing has still not been confirmed for the UK. However, it is reckoned that the much awaited tablet will possess a base price of about £400.
The carriers to provide mobile broadband to the iPad have not yet been revealed. Although the rumour mills have already spun plenty of information on this. While O2 and Orange have reportedly made bulk purchase of the micro SIM cards that the iPad will use for mobile internet access, even Vodafone is said to be joining in the iPad retailing in the UK. These mobile network providers are already the official retailers of the Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS here.
The Apple iPad offers pretty much all the features that an iPhone does (except the camera and flash player), plus a large display, more powerful processor, new enhancements like a dedicated eBook-store (iBook), new tools for doing official work (iWork) and more.
Dell Latitude 13 - Crafted for Mobility and Performance

Dell have extended their Latitude family to include the new Dell Latitude 13 Notebook, which has been designed for professionals on the move. It is supposed to be highly portable, budget friendly and a good performer as well.
This 13″ screen workstation is also supposed to be the thinnest commercial laptop in the world, and hence the company prefers calling it the “thinbook”. It weighs less than 1.5kg. Price-wise this device will sit in the £400 range.
The Intel CULV processor is said to have been incorporated in this notebook. As such, it is expected to deliver long run times. WiFi as well as 3G compliance will be offered for internet connectivity. Customers can either opt for a hard drive or a 64GB Flash drive.
Some special features of the Dell Latitude are its security options and the pre-installed utilities like Citrix Receiver agent. Full-disk encryption for the hard drive is optionally available. The Citrix Receiver allows using official applications on the Latitude 13 from anywhere. VMware View as well can be pre-loaded for simplifying and automating desktop management.
The Dell Latitude 13 is expected to start shipping by the end of February.
OLPC Encourages Donation of Unused XO Laptops to Haiti

The One Laptop Per Child group is encouraging people to donate their unused XO Laptops to children in Haiti, which suffered a massive earthquake on January 12, 2010. The death count is supposed to have crossed 150,000 in the region, which is now reduced to rubble.
The OLPC, which is a non-profit organisation have pitched in to help. They are asking people to send unused XO laptops to the US, to be passed on to the children in Haiti. The group is as well encouraging people to send in broken laptops for recycling.
Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of OLPC, has mentioned that 75% of schools in Port au Prince had been destroyed. He went on to say that the Haitian team was unhurt by good fortune. The group is now working in coordination with the government and the NGOs to send XO laptops to the children in Haiti, who do not have a school to go to.

HP MusicStation Digital Music Service Launches in Europe

HP are now offering an iTunes-like digital music service for their customers. This service called the HP MusicStation has been developed by Omnifone. HP customers can avail the service by subscribing to it. The monthly charge for it in the UK is £8.99. There’s a 2-week trial period as well. Consumers can get unlimited music downloads after subscribing to the service. They will be able to listen to the music that they have downloaded, when both online and offline.
HP will as well be integrating the MusicStation in plenty of their forthcoming laptops and desktop PCs. People who buy such laptops and PCs are supposed to be getting a 2-week free trial period, after which they’ll have to subscribe to the service for further usage. Customers will also be eligible to receive 10 music tracks, free every month, which they can keep for a lifetime.
The cut-throat competition at the PC/Laptop maker level requires these manufacturers to increasingly offer something different and highly desired. Digital music is something that will always have great demand. Rob Lewis, CEO of Omnifone has mentioned that digital music provides [device makers] an opportunity to appeal to consumers directly.
The HP MusicStation will initially be available in 10 European countries, namely, the UK, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Austria and Belgium. Monthly subscriptions vary from country to country.
Apart from the galaxy of music this station provides, such digital music service is also expected to reduce piracy and illegal sharing of music files.
