Nokia to Launch a Netbook?
February 27, 2009
Recently, the rumours on Nokia contemplating on launching a netbook has been flying high and wide. The immediate reason for the rumour-mill being triggered was the matter spoken by the European head of Nokia, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo to a Finnish broadcaster that they were very actively looking into that opportunity as well.
In the last one year, the rise of the netbooks has been nothing less than a landslide in the laptop market attitude. It is apparent as well that companies like HP, Dell and Apple are reconsidering their strategies, accordingly. Dell had its Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Netbook just launched in the UK market, as others like Apple are also on the trend of adapting, which is quite evident from their leaving a conspicuous gap in their product launches.
Meanwhile, Nokia obviously is eying on the probablities of turning themselves into a more versatile software based company with increased stress laid on cloud computing. Moreover, with their colossal manufacturing base and factories, would not ask for a long period to churn out a netbook with a bit of storage, an advanced operating system, a neat screen and keyboard. Wi-Fi and 3G advantage can give their flagship entry the necessary initial boost in the market.
With the onus shifting to the software segment, mainly for the self-sufficiency of the company in the hardware developing, predominantly heads should turn to any version of the Symbian OS. Speculations are already running high on their thinking over an Ovi Suite of applications for Ubuntu that allows local storage, as well as access to calendars, maps, music stores, address books and anything else under Ovi.
Nokia had recently launched an advanced PDA styled smartphone in Nokia N97 Smartphone that is nothing short than a mini-netbook.
