Netbook- The Latest Technophilia
October 23, 2008
Netbooks, as the name rightly suggests are gadgets that are solemnly attributed for internet usage. Netbooks are cousins of laptops and are smaller sized, lighter and cheaper than their cousins. Netbooks are hot techno devices that have formed the core of next technology revolution, by opening their doors wide to the web world and by leading you virtually into the era of information.
It all began with the introduction of HP OmniBook 800 CT in 1997, but it became more pronounced when it was actually termed by Psion in 1999 and today it has reached even a muggle because of Intel’s recent reintroduction of the theme. No wonder that the Netbooks have grabbed a considerable share of market from the notebooks, since Netbook manufacturers have included predominant features of the laptop in their products.
What are Netbooks?
Netbooks belong to a new class of PCs, which are smaller sized versions of notebooks that are tailor made, especially for accessing internet and surfing the web.
How does a Netbook differ from a notebook?
The main attribute that differentiates a Netbook from a notebook is its size, as Netbooks are smaller than a notebook and usually feature smaller screens.
A Netbook’s forte is its wireless connectivity, which is optional in a notebook.
The incorporation of solid state drives has hoisted these devices to a different league stressing on enhanced portability, though there are Netbooks that still come integrated with stodgy HDDs, which are less expensive and do not compromise much either, in performance. For example though Eee PC 901 comes with an SSD and Acer Aspire One comes with a HDD, both perform equally well.
However, Notebooks overtake Netbooks in their use of an optical disc drive and hence win comprehensively in the entertainment race.
Software focussed on internet usage is used prominently in Netbooks, while this criterion does not hold for notebooks. Netbooks come preinstalled with customised and specifically designed versions of Linux or Windows XP Home Edition and a new trend of installing Ubuntu Netbook Remix development Version has started in Netbook manufacturing lately.
Intel again comes into the arena of processors. Intel people’s cutting edge craftsmanship has resulted in the production of Intel Atom Processor built with the incredible Nanometre technology, specifically for Netbooks.
Netbooks- These gadgets have broadened the spectrum of global PC market in a spectacular way mainly because of their cost effectiveness. They are very cheaper than notebooks at the same time they deliver efficient performance too.
Netbooks in the Race:
• Asus Eee PC 901HD
• Asus Eee PC 904HD
• Lenovo IdeaPad S9
• Dell E series
• Acer Aspire One
• HP Mini Note
• Asus Eee PC 1000
• MSI Wind U100
• LG X110 Netbook
Netbooks can be visualised as gadgets that are capable of creating another revolution like the mobile phones, mainly owing to their increasing appreciation in the global market. The market success rate of Asus Eee PC is a standing proof for this comment. These gadgets can be used as alternate travel PCs, business mates and can even drive the internet savvy go nuts about it.
On the contrary, there are factors that make Netbooks a limited option device, which mainly includes lack of practicality, alienism towards the Linux operating system, lack of adequate storage memory and inability to broadband connection.

The connectivity sector in this laptop PC is adorned by Bluetooth, wired Ethernet and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi apart from a set of three smart and separate USB ports.
