Blackberry PlayBook Specs and Features
The Blackberry PlayBook Tablet was unveiled a couple of days back, at the RIM developer conference, held at San Francisco. Mainly aimed at rivaling the iPad, this tablet offers many features that the Apple tablet lacked, like cameras, multi-tasking ability, support for Adobe Flash player, to name a few. Having the same screen size as the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a comparison between the two seems inevitable. While RIM is well known for their gadgets, one aspect that they were lagging behind is the third party apps. They seem to have gone that extra step now, to get more developers to create apps for the tablet.
The Blackberry PlayBook specs go as follows:-
Screen
The 7†LCD of this tablet has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. This is a capacitive multi-touch screen with gesture recognition support too.
OS and Web Browser
The OS has been developed by a company called QNX, which was acquired by RIM in April 2010. QNX developed software that powered a variety of things, starting from car entertainment systems and gaming terminals, to air traffic control systems, equipment used for surgical purposes and even nuclear plants.
The QNX OS being used in the PlayBook is referred to as the Blackberry tablet OS. This platform is capable of multi-tasking. It offers a full web browser with support for Adobe Flash 10.1 and HTML5.
Processor and RAM
A dual core 1GHz processor along with a 1GB RAM form the brain of this device. The PlayBook is thus touted as the world’s first tablet to run a dual core processor. RIM aims to bring true laptop-like multitasking (where-in applications run in the background, without being paused or suspended when the user switches to another app) on the tablet.
Cameras
The PlayBook is home to 2 cameras – a rear 5MP one and a front-facing 3MP one. Hence video calling and even realtime video conferencing are on the list. Plus, there is support for 1080p high definition video capture too.
Multimedia and Entertainment
MP3, AAC and WMA formats for audio and H.264, MPEG, DivX and WMV formats for video are supported. The tablet can even play 1080p content. Not only this, but it can also stream this content to a high definition television via its micro-HDMI port. It as well supports DLNA streaming, which means that content can be streamed to compatible TVs wirelessly.
Other connectors
Apart from the micro-HDMI port, there is a micro-USB port too. Thus, linking with a PC or a laptop is just as a matter of plugging the cable in.
Internet
The PlayBook supports all WiFi standards (802.11 a/b/g/n). As for 3G connectivity, the initial models might not support this. 3G as well as 4G ready models are expected to be available a little later. Apart from this, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR compliance is offered. Tethering with a Blackberry phone, either using Bluetooth or WiFi is allowed. The enterprise Blackberry services can thus be used on the tablet as well.
For the Developers
RIM is putting a variety of tools and features at the disposal of the app-makers, like Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Reader, WebKit/HTML-5, POSIX, OpenGL and Java. The QNX platform is said to be developer friendly and flexible. There is a virtualization option which allows virtually creating the tablet on a computer screen. This feature should be highly beneficial for the developer-community for their app simulation. Another aspect that RIM has paid attention to is “adaptive partitioningâ€. This feature takes care that no single app eats up all the RAM space and grabs all the processor attention. All apps are guaranteed to get the memory and processor support, that they require.
Aesthetics and Form Factor
The Blackberry PlayBook has a sleek and svelte form factor. It measures 130mm x 193mm x 10mm and weighs just 400g. Hence it should be hand as well as baggage friendly.
The PlayBook seems to be targeted at a large section of the consumer crowd. While it has enterprise abilities for business users, it also houses entertainment, multimedia and social networking features for all. Plus, it allows creating multiple user accounts on it, for allowing sharing between users. It is expected to release early in 2011, but exact release dates and pricing are yet to be affirmed.

Though built to be a strong workstation, it is quite light, weighing just 1.66kg. There are some more noteworthy aspects about this machine. A brief account is given below.

You can then use a digital pen to draw on it. With just 2 fingers you can even scroll through photographs, watch videos, play songs, expand or contract the view and more. While you do all this, the MediaSmart software works beneath the screen to accomplish the tasks.
Connect to the internet at hotspots and local wireless networks with the WiFi ability of this touchscreen laptop. Being Bluetooth capable, this convertible notebook allows wireless connectivity with other Bluetooth enabled devices. Click pictures, shoot video clips or chat face to face with near and dear ones with the web-camera that has been built into this tablet PC. The Altec Lansing stereo speakers with SRS Premium sound have been adopted to produce the right kind of acoustics to accompany the stunning video performance.

A 5-in-1 digital media reader is built into this mobile computer too, for connecting your phone or camera, for file transfers. There is a finger-print reader for security of your data, which is located on the right hand rim of the screen panel. A very thoughtful idea indeed. Some laptops have their finger-print readers placed on the palm rests. This is quite annoying as it gives a pop-up window every time you accidentally swipe your hand over the reader while typing. The HP TouchSmart TX2 Touchscreen Convertible Notebook, thus offers a good range of features, making it an ideal family multi-media laptop.
