Intel’s next-gen Atom processors, called the Pine Trail platform, are supposed to be more efficient than the existing Atom processors. Power consumption is supposed to be 20% lower. They will also be smaller in size, with a 64% smaller footprint, as the company is now using 2 chips on-dye instead of 3. They have even employed new manufacturing processes, that help reduce the size of the processors. The new processors will also be faster with higher clock speeds than the present ones.
As such, the manufacturing costs of the processors are supposed to have come down. A 4-layered PCB is employed, which has contributed to bringing down these costs. However, according to Fudzilla, the netbooks that will be using these processors might not have a reduction in their costs, as the features are expected to be much better.
These new generation of Atom processors are expected to be available to the laptop makers by Q1 of 2010.
