An advanced laptop used by the Signals Regiment has been reported missing with a number of significant documents such as SAS soldiers’ names and details of top-secret SAS training excercises on Sunday. The reports also revealed that the laptop PC that was found missing during a recent excercise in the UK was not encrypted.
A source close to the authorities disclosed that the missing laptop contained highly sensitive data on the regiment’s couter terrorism and regular military manoeuvres. The loss had been identified after a routine audit carried out by the military chiefs, who realised amidst the audit that the device was missing.
Even though an immediate explanation from the MoD arrived stating that the missing laptop did not consist of any detail of weapons or information regarding military operations, a statement from Liam Fox, the Shadow Defence Secretary came up revealing that the loss was deeply concerning. He added that any data loss of this stature was deeply concerning, specifically if they also pertained to security implications.
In the wake of the incidence, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said that they could confirm that they were investigating a possible hard drive loss, a device that contained only information that was unclassified being engaged on a training exercise. He added that inquiries were being carried out into what had happened.
However, something of definite concern for the MoD was Liam Fox’s assumption that the Torries would be demanding answers on the issue.
