Toshiba Portege R600-ST4203 Notebook has taken Solid State Drive storage to a whole new level, with the 512GB capacity SSD it houses. Hard disk drives have always offered more storage capacities when compared to solid state drives. And SSDs have always been faster than HDDs. With the advent of this new kind of SSD, maybe hard disks might face extinction soon.
Most SSDs available in the market had storage spaces of 32GB or 64GB or 128GB. These drives used single-level cell NAND flash memory. The new 512GB SSD from Toshiba uses the native second generation eSATA technology, with a multi-level cell NAND flash memory for increasing the capacity of storage. However, the speeds offered by the lower capacity SSDs will be higher than that of the 512GB SSD. But when compared to hard disk drives, the 512GB SSD will definitely operate faster. The booting time, the starting up of applications, access times will all be much faster with this notebook than others with HDDs. The new SSD is expected to offer a read speed of 240Mbps and a write speed of 200Mbps.
The other specifications of Toshiba Portege R600-ST4203 Notebook include a 12.1” widescreen LED rear-lit display. The resolution offered by this LCD monitor is 1280 x 800 pixels. The processor employed is the Intel Ultra Low Voltage Core 2 Duo SU94005. A 3GB RAM is also present in this ultraportable laptop. For handling graphics the Intel GMA 4500MHD card has been integrated. A SuperMulti DVD burner is on board this UMPC as well. The operating system pre-loaded is the Microsoft Windows Vista Business OS. WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity are supported too. The case of this device is tough, durable and can withstand shocks and jerks. Cost-wise, SSDs still remain more expensive than HDDs. Hence this laptop does carry a heavy price tag. It is expected to priced at about £2300 and we keep fingers crossed for a UK release.
Toshiba Portege R600-ST4203 512GB SSD Notebook is an Apple MacBook Air killer as well, with a weight of just 1.1kg and a thickness of 0.77”.
